Troy Williams

Written by Karver Jordan

The Pittsburgh Maulers quarterback Troy Williams. The 6-foot-2-inch dual-threat quarterback is ready to showcase his talent in the USFL this season, the former Utah quarterback was electric in college and has hopes to bring it to the USFL.

I asked the Dual threat What makes Troy Williams unique?

The quarterback would respond with “What makes my game unique is I feel like I can throw the ball with the best of them when it comes to arm talent. I can also break contain and make plays with my legs when the defense gives me lanes to do so. I feel like I can throw and extend plays at a high level which makes it hard on the defense and gives us versatility as an offensive unit.”

This quarterbacks career at Utah was great. The dual-threat quarterback shined in the moments his team needed him. A key point in William's career was the USC game, it was one of the best 4th quarter comebacks. Looking at statistics the dual-threat could sling it. In 21 career games, the 6’2 quarterback would attempt 500 passes and only complete 267 of those. (267-500) However, he would throw for 3,569 passing yards with 17 touchdowns and only 12 picks. The numbers were okay, but his leadership was above all of those paper stats. William’s overall completion percentage would be 53%. The Utah quarterback is a dual threat due to his ability to run the ball. On 151 rushing attempts, the quarterback would rush for 310 yards with 9 touchdowns over his college career. 2.1 yards a pop for a quarterback is something to be proud about.

I got the chance to speak with Williams about how he felt about his college career, he would touch base on what he learned from Utah.

“My career at Utah was one to learn from, had some great moments there and also ones I had to learn from. It helped me prepare myself for the marathon that I am on today and will continue to be on in order to one day make an NFL roster.”

I talked to the quarterback about what fans should expect from him in the USFL.

He would respond with “Mauler and USFL fans should know that I’m here to work. It’s a blessing to have this opportunity so I’m going to do everything I can to make the most of it and have fun while doing so. I want to help my team win as much as possible so I take it upon myself to be the best player can be at all times with my opportunities. The work is never done.”

Troy William's Professional career is something he should be proud of, he was a part of the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Chargers rookie minicamps in 2018. He wouldn’t sign with any of those teams however, He got the experience of being at the highest level of football. Troy Williams was signed by the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL) He was just a backup. He spent some time in the CFL but never really got the chance he deserved. This is where the USFL Pittsburgh Maulers would give him the chance to showcase his talents in front of fans. Troy Williams has been working his whole career for an opportunity and USFL fans should expect nothing but the best from him.

Troy Williams would touch base on what he worked on this offseason and what he hopes to get out of USFL.

“During the off-season, I worked on a lot of mechanical things when it comes to my arm angle and finishing throws with more power and velocity behind them really using my legs and my core.”

“I hope to create relationships throughout the league with my teammates and coaching staff and create an opportunity for myself to play in the NFL.”

There’s a lot Williams should be proud of, a lot of his aspects make him unique. I got the chance to speak with Coach Chris Brown, only one of the many coaches who has had the honor to coach Troy Williams. I asked him what makes him special and what should fans expect from him.

Coach Brown would respond with “What makes Troy special is that he has this unique ability to walk into any room or on any field and his energy is quickly felt. He’s a natural-born leader that proves it by his play on the field and follows him off the field. He’s extremely smart and knows how to effectively communicate to the people around him regardless of the circumstance.

Whether the game is tight, the stadium is loud, or things are going south he knows how to rally the troops, take command of the huddle and get the job done.”

Coach Brown would add on about what fans should expect.

“When fans see Troy they should expect high energy, excited plays, great throws, and explosive runs. He’s a quarterback that can do it all so stay tuned.”
